The Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) comprise five institutes and numerous other labs and facilities. SIAT was jointly established by CAS, the Shenzhen municipal government and the Chinese University of Hong Kong in February 2006. SIAT aims to enhance the innovative capacity of the equipment manufacturing and service industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong region, promote the development of emerging industries possessing their own proprietary intellectual property, and become a world-class industrial research institute.
SIAT’s main component divisions include the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Integration Technology (SIIT), the Institute of Biomedical and Health Engineering (IBHE), the Institute of Advanced Computing and Digital Engineering (IACDE), the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology (IBB) ,the Institute of Brain Cognition and Brain Disorders (IBCBD) and the Guangzhou Institute of Advanced Technology (GIAT), as well as the National Engineering Laboratory of Biomedical Informatics and Healthcare and the National Engineering Laboratory of High-density Integrated Circuit Packaging Technology. It is also home to five key labs and platforms at the provincial level and 18 key labs and platforms at the municipal level.
In its short history, SIAT has made significant achievements in human resource development, academic researches and commercializing technologies. The team of SIAT has dramatically grown up from 5 persons in March, 2006 to 1986 persons at the end of 2015. Among the whole personnel, 950 of them are senior research scientists, 258 of them have PhD Degree, and 411 have oversea studying/working experience The Nobel Prize winner, Einstein Professor, Academicians and Part-time professors from HK、Macau、Taiwan nearly 100 people.
To meet national needs in information technology and biotechnology, SIAT set its orientation towards the emerging industries of “Low-cost Healthcare”, “High-end Medical Imaging”, "Rehabilitation Robot" "Big Data", “Precision Medicine” and “New Energy”, and “Brain Science”. With regarding to industry cooperation, SIAT has established concrete partnership with more than 200 firms including Huawei, Midea, CIMC, and driving new industry output of more than 1 billion RMB.
SIAT has also established long-term cooperative ties with many foreign academic and research institutions, including Stanford University (USA), NICTA (Australia), TRLabs (Canada), the University of Hamburg (Germany), the University of Southampton (UK) and many other institutions.
