L-3 Security and Detection Systems tasked IPS’ Product Development team with the development of its new generation Advanced People Screening scanner design. This full body scanner is used mainly in airports and other major public areas to enhance security. This aggressive development effort drew upon IPS’s multi-disciplinary talents in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software and Program Management.

Development of the Full Body Scanner

Key to the success of the ProVision 2 was improvement of the user experience for all stakeholders: airport staff, riggers transporting the scanner into or within the facility, technicians preparing the scanners for use as well as the airline staff and the traveling public. This was to be accomplished while continually aligning with and enhancing the L-3 brand to develop a safe, high performance and aesthetically pleasing new design.

The primary goals – increasing Category 3 airport access (significant reduction in overall size, improved installation (time and safety), and allowance for the incorporation of future scanning technologies were all accomplished through IPS’s meticulous product development efforts. Of greatest importance to L-3 was delivery of a very safe non x-ray, high-throughput and physically compact scanner to allow for faster, smoother traffic flow at airport security checkpoints.

The IPS team realized this challenge by collaborating closely with L-3 SDS and researching the existing system and by employing a multidisciplinary approach to arrive at innovative, robust and cost saving concepts. This was accomplished while simultaneously satisfying the requirement for a greatly reduced footprint, improved aesthetics and functionality. IPS was able to hone in on the final system solution while maintaining the integrity of the advanced millimeter scanning technology.

IPS Program Management team coordinated these efforts with L-3 SDS to ensure efficient and close collaboration between the various groups within the project team. The management team also managed the outside vendors employed during both the development phase and prototype manufacturing.

This fast-track, complex and multi-disciplinary project was completed in 10 months within budget. L-3 SDS has subsequently gone on to receive an award from the Transportation Security Administration to supply the second generation of Advanced Imaging Technology with a ceiling value of $245 million.


Wearable Headset Computer

IPS provided Motorola Solutions (now Zebra Technologies) with full multi-functional support for the development of the HC1 – a wearable headset computer. The system includes voice recognition, WLAN/BT, 9-axis head tracking, wireless communications and a 15″ micro display. Key project areas included overall Program Management, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, User Experience and Human Factors, Software Design and Product Marketing & Communications.

The IPS Program Management team coordinated every aspect of the product development, including budget management, schedule and phase gates, cost control, quality assurance and testing and validation. The team was also responsible for extensive vendor relations management and coordination between Motorola, its technology partner Kopin and upwards of a dozen additional outside software and hardware vendors worldwide to develop and produce the HC1. Full IPS team involvement included trouble shooting, proof of concept evaluation, components selection, PCB layouts, cables and connections, weight distribution and the full documentation package and transfer to the manufacturing partner. System level software was coordinated and integrated between multiple partners.

The IPS Marketing team provides ongoing support to the HC1 launch effort including extensive customer relationship management and product messaging support spanning Early Adopter phase through Go-to-Market.

Smart Pill Bottle

AdhereTech is a healthcare firm that makes simple and effective medication adherence tools. We were approached by AdhereTech to help create the next generation of their smart pill bottle.

Development of the Smart Pill Bottle

Tapping nearly all of IPS’ engineering services and capabilities, our teams have been fully engaged in developing the second generation of the product. During the process, IPS has worked with regulatory bodies such as the FDA, FCC, and UL to help create product requirements for the bottle. Our teams work closely together with AdhereTech to refine the product which includes designing the overall electro-mechanical architecture, conducting trade studies and requirement down selection, coordinating and testing the fabrication of prototypes, implementing the design drawings, and readying documentation for transitioning the design to a manufacturing facility.

Power Probe IV

Power Probe is dedicated to producing innovative, easy to use diagnostic equipment for the automotive industry. The recent Power Probe IV, the result of extensive collaboration with IPS, is reliable, effective and an economical automotive diagnostic tool for the auto service market.

Development of Power Probe IV

The Power Probe IV development effort tapped IPS’ SW, EE, SE and Industrial Design talents, but also relied heavily on our Embedded Systems services for the development of precise device controls. Created to measure vehicle signals, the Power Probe IV features high-end, specialty modes while also remaining a cost effective solution. The development process required designing, developing, and integrating Power Probe’s new proprietary hardware and control software, and developing the automated calibration and test fixture that is used in manufacturing.


LED Lighting Solutions

LED based lighting systems are at the forefront of technology in energy efficient interior and exterior lighting. Working with our partner, LED Specialists Inc., IPS has created a variety of lighting solutions for innovative manufacturers of lighting products.

Development of Lighting Solutions

For several years, IPS has been engaged with Lighting Sciences Group in design of a variety of LED based lighting solutions from low wattage interior lighting, such as PAR20 flood lamps, to higher power commercial outdoor lighting as in the Wallpack through high voltage large street lighting systems for European and domestic applications.

Marine applications are particularly sensitive to energy management as well as the need to work in extreme environments. IPS has worked with Imtra Marine on design of several innovative and market leading LED lighting products. Our team has supported our clients with everything from Industrial Design, Electrical and Mechanical Design and analysis and Optical Engineering through prototyping and manufacturing startup. All this has lead to the introduction of cost effective, energy efficient lighting products using the latest LED technologies, thermal management and control systems.


Hybrid Electric System

IPS’ transportation team introduced a new, low-cost hybrid electric conversion system for trucks and buses. It combines robust motor and drive technology with proprietary software and control electronics to create an easy-to-install hybrid electric system. The system pays for itself by reducing operation costs with its two primary functions.

Hybrid Electric System Primary Functions:

Regenerative Braking, referred to as kinetic energy recovery, creates charges every time you press the brake pedal. Energy typically lost in heat gets stored in an ultra-efficient capacitor system to help launch the vehicle.

Launch Assist during vehicle acceleration supplements the conventional drivetrain with electric power in order to displace fuel consumption and reduce airborne emissions.

The Hybrid Electric System is available in three sizes for commercial truck and bus applications ranging from Class 2 thru Class 8.
