Design Brief & Project Planning

It’s crucial to your project’s success that you and your project team know what you are trying to achieve and why.
You’ll be assigned a lead designer and experienced project manager to work you through our detailed design brief – a series of important questions to ensure your project has a clearly defined purpose and goals.
A proposed Project Plan, including timeframe, estimated costs and resources will be mapped out for you to review. Project plans are divided into clear stages and deliverables to track progress, and are often visualised in the form of a Gantt chart. If you have in-house resources, their contribution is also spelled out so you don’t pay for what you don’t need.

Design Strategy, Market Research & Positioning

We like to start with big picture thinking before getting into the detail.
We can help you understand your product’s place in the world by completing a competitor review, including gap analysis and market segmentation to identify niche opportunities. You’ll also start to see both the short and long term prospects for your product and brand.

This is where we unlock the possibilities of what a product could be to reach its full potential. Industrial Design & Form-Giving

Industrial design covers the gamut of product development process, but is commonly understood as styling the “look and feel” of a product. This is where your vision really starts to come to life and evolve in different directions. Ideation is translated into sketches and marker renderings to visually explore a wide range of product formats and features. Think of this as free-flowing visualised brainstorming. These ideas are grouped into coherent themes and distilled into specific concept directions for presentation and discussion.


Mock-ups are simple handmade prototypes fabricated in our workshop from basic materials like blue foam, MDF, sheet metal, common plastics and fasteners. It’s always exciting to see two dimensional sketch concepts suddenly transformed into 3D tangible objects. Mock-ups are great communication tools, as multiple concepts can be compared and easily imagined as finished products.

User Experience Design & Human Factors Engineering

User Experience (UX) design looks at the entire product use cycle to improve user-product interactions and understanding. Human Factors Engineering covers anthropometrics – body dimensions and limitations, and ergonomics – comfort and ease of use.

3D CAD Modelling

Computer Aided Design (CAD) has revolutionised product development by improving visualisation and communication, highlighting issues before they become problems, and dramatically shortening development time. A CAD model is a virtual three-dimensional representation of a product or packaging solution. It can be a simple conceptual form, or an incredibly detailed assembly constructed from thousands of parts. Once you have a CAD model you can run all types of analysis and virtual testing, such as mould flow analysis, realistic visualisation and 3D printed prototypes.

Product Rendering & Animation

In the hands of a skilled operator, advanced rendering software can transform a CAD model into a realistic-looking product image called a ‘rendering’. That rendering can be ‘Photoshopped’ into another image of the surroundings to contextualise the product. Unlike a photograph of an existing product or prototype, a rendering is a photograph of an object that doesn’t yet exist.

Product Engineering & DfM

Once a preferred design is reached, the product can be engineered to ensure it will be fit for mass production and use. Parts become much more detailed and refined in this Design for Manufacture stage. Refined models can be analysed by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software to verify strength under simulated loads, while systematic Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) detects problems before the arise. Computer files and technical drawings are then shared with manufacturers for feedback to ensure a smooth transition to production.

We can connect you with trusted toolmakers, manufacturers, as well as materials and component suppliers around the world to ensure you’re getting the right mix of speed, quality and cost. GUI Design

User Interface (UI) refers to the features of the product that the customer interacts with, including buttons, switches, knobs, access panels, mics, connectors, and indicator sounds. Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a subset of UI, mainly concerned with product display screens and apps, but includes other graphical affordances including indicator lights and labels.

Product detailing - Colours, Materials & Finishes

It’s the finishing touches that make a good looking product world class. All the colours, materials and finishes (CMF) are carefully considered to ensure a unique and cohesive style consistent with customer expectations and the brand’s image.


Rapid prototyping techniques like 3D printing are a huge advantage, as CAD models can literally be printed layer by layer into 3D parts in a matter of hours. Find out more about 3D printing in on the Resources page.

Product Testing

Shipping a quality product that performs well in the field builds confidence in your brand and customer loyalty. There are often dozens of variables to test to make sure your product meets expectations and to minimise warrantee returns.

Packaging Design

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so don’t treat your product packaging as an afterthought. Start the discussion early in your project so your packaging design not only keeps your product in pristine condition in transit, but looks amazing on retail shelf and creates an impactful product reveal experience.

User Manuals

Your customer has just purchased your product. Opening the box, it looks great, and he’s really excited to start using it right away. Don’t disappoint. A well designed quick start guide lets him do this. Round off your user experience with this important first conversation with your customer.

Tooling & Production Management

While CAD modelling, DFM engineering and rapid prototyping have improved communication and condensed the product development process, there are still quality assurance issues to address in production. You need someone who can help you interpret the processing reports, check critical dimension deviations from off-tool samples and ensure qualitative factors, such as surface finish meet expectations.

Our works

(1) Swann One

Home Security System


Challenge: To develop a new home security system from the ground up, focusing on ease of use, and balancing advanced capabilities with an inviting format in a family range of products that sit comfortably in a home setting.

Insight: A security hub doesn't need to be a black box. Outerspace designed the Hub to be a tray to drop your wallet & keys in, a place to store that loose USB stick, a charging station for your phone. Rather than a box, it is an elegant and functional vessel with the electronics working invisibly in the background.

Result: Full production has just started. Presentations to prospective distributors have generated overwhelming interest and demand, resulting in Swann’s marketing department substantially increasing their sales forecasts.

(2) Patron Power



Challenge: Design a completely new, high quality marine services pedestal that would appeal to prestige marinas around the world.

Insight: The product not only had to look good, but also have novel features and exceptional detailing and durability.

Result: The stylish modular design is constructed of corrosion-resistant aluminium, with a customisable fascia, and high tech safety and remote monitoring features resulting in and immediate increase in sales and exports to new markets.

(3) Cochlear

Challenge: To turn Cochlear’s new implant-optimising technology into a functional product, in a very short time frame for low volume production.

Insight: CAD visualization, rapid prototyping technology and close client communication could aid decision making to beat the deadline.

Result: Using 3D CAD modelling and vacuum casting of 3D printed parts, professional-quality units were developed in less a month from brief to delivery.

(4) sunSmudg

Compact Sunscreen Applicator & Packaging

Challenge: To design eco-friendly, user-friendly packaging for a new and novel compact sunscreen applicator.

Insight: Eco-friendly packaging doesn't have to be ugly. Using recycled materials, minimising packaging parts and eliminating adhesives, the packaging could still show-off the product and be easy to use.

Result: The frustration-free PET packaging maximises product visibility. A printed perimeter offers instructions, and the tear-away tab makes it easy to separate materials for recycling.

(5) Optalert

Wireless Drowsiness Detection Glasses


Challenge: To prevent driver accidents by turning drowsiness detection research into an effective eye-monitoring product.

Insight: For the flagship product to work, the optical sensor position must be optimised in relation to the eye, across a wide range of face shapes and sizes.

Result: Many lives have already been saved. Outerspace’s versatile set-and-forget system of spacers customises the ergonomics to the user for effective eyelid monitoring. Outerspace also collaborated with Optalert's team to refine the recently released next generation wireless product.

(6) LifeProof

WaterProof Protective Case Range

WaterProof Battery Cases

Challenge: To provide total smart phone protection without ruining the iPhone’s aesthetics or compromising on functionality or user experience.

Insight: Outerspace’s designers and engineers would have to collaborate closely to develop highly engineered case features for each of the phone’s sensors, buttons and connectors, using a multitude of materials and mass production technologies.

Result: Embodying more than a dozen materials, processes and components, the sophisticated flagship LifeProof for iPhone 4 launched as the thinnest, lightest case providing dust, drop and water-proof protection. LifeProof was purchased by its largest competitor, and continues to leverage the patented technologies to offer cases for a wide range of mobile devices.

(7) Back Liberator

Traction Device


Challenge: To turn a 2m tall, free-standing, steel-framed back traction device into a cost-effective, user-friendly, therapeutic device suitable for mass production and a wide range of body shapes and sizes.

Insight: By suspending the harness from the user's sides, rather than overhead, the product could be made compact and portable. Also, by combining metals plastics the weight could be further reduced without compromising load strength.

Result: User trials were so successful that subjects didn't want to return their Back Liberators after testing.

(8) Daily Juice

On-the-go Bottle


Challenge: To help a well-established Australian juice brand compete as a healthy alternative to popular sport and energy drinks.

Insight: The outdated packaging needed to be more appealing and user-centric for active lifestyles. Also, the two bottle sizes and two lid options created too many SKUs, creating logistical nightmares.

Result: The dynamic new ergonomic bottle format with pop-top lid resonated with on-the-go consumers, boosting sales beyond the brands’ optimistic forecasts, and winning several design awards. Consolidating preforms, neck finish and cap formats across the range reduced filling line changeovers and wastage, further increasing profits.
